“A few years back Dave and I spent a few days at Kochi (formerly Cochin) down in Kerala State on India’s Malabar Coast in the south-west of the peninsula. The Old Town of Kochi is on a spit of land at the mouth of a large natural harbour, and at the end of that spit of land are a battery of fishing-nets suspended on booms.

“The design’s quite unusual for the sub-continent – apparently it’s of Chinese origin. It was quite something to see the fishermen hauling away on the ropes to retrieve their catch.”

“The Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur used to be the tallest buildings in the world until they were overtaken by Taipei 101 in 2004. But they’re still a major landmark and striking buildings in their own right.

“With their glass-and-steel exterior, they look a bit as if they’re made of pewter (for which Malaysia’s also famous) in the right light conditions, like twilight.”
