Robert the Bruce - In February 1306 two cousins embraced as they entered the Church of the Minorite Friars in Dumfries. Within minutes the veneer of friendship had slipped. As they stood deep in earnest conversation their voices began to rise. Rage boiled over. A dagger was drawn and an almost instinctive strike sent Sir John Comyn, Lord of Badenoch and the most powerful man in Scotland, staggering back, clutching his chest. Instantaneously Robert Bruce, Earl of Carrick and Lord of Annandale, was hit by the full realisation of his actions. He had killed a kinsman in cold blood inside a church.

Just a Par to Win

Read a short story by well-known Scottish author, William Meikle. "Just A Par To Win" is one of his collection The Johnson Amulet and Other Scottish Terrors, available at Amazon and Barnes & Noble. Don't miss this!

A Stroll around Inverewe Gardens

Shall we rename this The Mike Clark Page? The man's a star! Join him on a historical and horticultural tour (try saying that after a few drams) of one of Scotland's best gardens:
Take Me Home, Country Rhodys

If you're a fan of Mike's, visit the Garden Gate - a gateway to all his writing on this site.

From Scotland to Fiji...

Dr Peter Forster moved from a rural community in Scotland's North East to a new life in Fiji. Was it all sunshine and basking on beaches? Here's an account of his first year there: Letter from Fiji

Plan now for the next Burns Night

Mike Clark sends birthday greetings to britishexpat.com and advises that now is the time to start planning for the next Burns Night. Here's how to celebrate in style with home-grown produce. This is obviously something to be taken very seriously, if you want to do things properly. Robert Burns Night - DIY

Interested in gardening?

Have you seen our gardening column yet? It's written by Mike Clark, who works as a landscape gardener in the North East of Scotland. Even if you're not mad keen to get the mower out, this is well worth a read for its entertainment value. Mike describes it as "a sideways look at gardening". Don't miss it! Clark In The Park

Take a virtual tour - sign up here for only £500!

But, of course, if you're Scottish you'll have figured out that you can go for free!

I've scoured the web to find the best Scottish sites, so grab a flask of your favourite drink, make sure you're sitting comfortably, and enjoy your tour of Scotland. Right, we're off.

We'll start with Glasgow for an update of all that's happening in this cultural city. Before you get back on our virtual bus, why not pop in to Rennie Mackintosh's house?

OK, we're going along the M8 now and on the right you'll see a link to Edinburgh. Take a virtual tour of the city and brush up on your history as well as enjoying the views.

We'll head north over the Firth and take the road to Dundee. Where, allegedly, "Ay ay ay pay" means "I have eaten a pie". North again to Aberdeen (and a website which has horrible frames but an interesting history section if you're up for it).

Assuming we can get fuel, we'll drive up the A9 next to Inverness for a well presented guide with lots of good links to other Scottish places. Check them out if you feel like wandering off to a few islands.

It's been a long day, but before you go I'd like to show you one last thing. Even if you have no connection with Caithness this site is worth a look. In my opinion it's a magnificent example of a community site. There's loads of useful stuff there and some laughs too. There was a desperate plea on the discussion forum, from an expat, for someone to go and teach a Wick man how to use the Internet so he could be contacted by email. Aye, ye have tae smile.

I hope you enjoyed your tour and that you'll notice the tip box on your way out.

Are you a wannabe Loch Ness academic?

This is daft! Now you can get a free degree as a Monster Hunter and print out a certificate for your wall. As well as the fun, this site has loads of useful information. There's a live web-cam on the site so you can hunt for Nessie without leaving your desk. Have fun! www.lochness.co.uk

School visit

This is probably the Scottish equivalent of an urban myth but here goes anyway:

A vet visited a school in Aberdeenshire. He spent the best part of an hour talking to the children about his work. At the end he asked if anyone had any questions. There was silence. He asked again if they were sure they didn't want to ask him anything. Eventually a little girl put up her hand.

"Yes?" said the vet, "and what would you like to ask me?"

"Excuse me, mister," she replied, "where did you get your shoes?"
