I'm currently reading the novel "A Tapestry of Love" by Rosy Thornton, which was sent to me by the author for review (coming soon). The main character in the book is living in a very rural area in France and naturally finds it takes time to be accepted in the community. In a city you can get away with far les interaction, but try keeping to yourself in a rural or smaller urban area and you'll soon gain a reputation for being ignorant.
