Hi, we moved from Scotland to NS in June 2008, when our youngest child was 10 weeks old. He is now 5.5 months and it is time to switch from nursing to formula. However, I don't know any of the brands of formula milk here, and I was hoping someone might be able to recommend something? Ideally I would like something similar to SMA which is a brand in the UK and is supposed to be closest to breast milk. Any advice greatly appreciated, I am going out to buy some tonight! Nikki

Jessica, thanks for that, we do have public health nurses here in NS but the closest clinic is a few miles away and I don't drive so it's very awkward to get to with the baby and my 3 year old, while trying to make it back to pick up my 2 older boys from school in time. In the Uk the health visitor would do a home visit, but it doesn't seem it's done here.

Caroline, thanks a lot for your info too - I nursed my previous 2 until 12/14 months, but wanted to put my baby onto formula as I am a bit concerned about his weight gain, while he is not losing weight he has dropped to the lower end of the healthy weight range for his age - since he was a big baby at birth and always on the 75th centile, I am wondering why. He has been to the docs for a check up and weigh-in a couple of weeks ago.

I think if we do opt for formula it will only be for the bedtime feed initially, and I will make every effort to get him to a regular weigh-in and speak to a professional about my concerns.

Thanks, Nikki.

I remember when we lived in NS that the doctor or chemist in Superstore seemed to be my port of call.

Munupla (think that is how its spelt is what my mum put me on and when she was here she said oh look Atlantic Superstore sell the same stuff you were on as a child and pointed to it).
