Hi Claire,

My wife and I moved to Ontario at the end of July. We bought a minivan within a week and were recommended a local broker who we visited at their office. (Bracebridge, ON) We got our first year's insurance for $2500 - A lot more than a local with Canadian history, but we had expected it to be high.

Anyway - we paid $12K for the minvan and the broker saw a huge variety of prices for insurance, many higher than the above. Both my wife and I had full No Claims Bonus in the UK before we left but had not managed to get a letter from either insuarnce company confimring our claim free history. Several companies required this confirmation, BUT still would only give the equivalent of one years discount.

It turns out that PILOT INSURANCE offered the best price AND did not want a confirmation of previous country history. They automatically factored in the 1 year(standard for newcommers) into the price.

We're currently about 2.5 hrs north of toronto at my wife's family's place unitl we get jobs located nearer the city. The premium will go up a couple of hundred bucks once we are nearer the city itself.

Hope that helps. Definately get your broker to try PILOT.

Cheers
Ant
