Hello
I am still in the UK but I have a British friend in Canada (Ontario). He is a car enthusiast and has just bought a British car and will take it to car shows.
I would love to buy him a European-shape licence plate for the car, which would look more authentic than the North American plates used in Ontario. I have found both Canadian-badged plates but in the European shape, e.g. [Edit: link removed. Please read our posting guidelines. Kay]
However, as far as I can tell from the Ontario website, these plates would effectively be novelty items, as Ontario plates are only as issued by the official provincial agency. To use them at a show he'd have to change them every time, which sounds like hassle.
Do you think my reading of the position is right?
Thanks

Yes, to drive the vehicle on the highway it would need to be plated the correct way and have valid decals on it. The European style plates are really only for show as far as I understand.

Thanks for the rapid response. I guess if he had to change them for a show, I may as well get UK versions

Graeme is correct. The plates are proscribed and issued and have to be displayed as is. I have seen many British type cars with the original British plates in addition to the Canadian plates, but that is illegal. Your idea to replace the Canadian plates with British plates while at shows but off the road is very workable.
Ecstatic in paradise.
