Hi, I will be living near karlstad in 1 month. (Moving with my long-time swedish gf and child.

A few things I was wondering about...

1. Voting - When will I be allowed to vote in the Swedish system?
I know I can still vote in the UK general election for 15 years, but can I have both?
If so is this fair? What are your opinions?

2. I will be buying a car and a motorcycle over there, and will obviously need to drive it. Will I be able to be insured before getting my "number"(obviously my gf can get insurances, can she add me?)

3. My gf has said that you don't accumulate penalty points on a driving licence? So how does this work?

*edit
Just thought I would add...

I have been visiting Sweden with my other half since 1996, and love it. I have been very lax in not learning Swedish, but I intend to go to the SFI as soon as possible.

I am very much looking forward to the space, and clean air...permanently.

(Not so much the price of beer in pubs though Wink)

Under EU agreements, you can vote in local and EU elections anywhere within the EU on the same basis as the citizens of the country you're living in. I don't know what rules Sweden applies to the franchise for national elections, but as far as I know there's no obligation on EU Member States to give the vote to other MSs' citizens for national elections at any time, no matter how long they've been resident.

Hi Seagull, I will be moving just north of you hopefully at the end of this summer.
Car insurance is alot easier in th e skandinavian countries

The car is insured for anyone to drive which includes you.. me or or anyone with a valid licence...
One payment and anyone can drive..(unless its changed within the last few years)
Not as in the UK system, one name on one car only and anyone after that is extra payment..spouse , siblings etc.. (which is a complete and utter rip off!)
Im in Denmark at the moment which is the same as sweden..

H

PS, dont know about voting...I dont vote , its a waste of time as the Govt always gets in
