Hi All,

I would be grateful if anyone could advise me of the legal aspects if as a British citizen I move to Germany to live there permanently to be with my German girlfriend who is resident there. Do I need to register my status after 3 months? I am NOT intending to work in Germany at least not for the foreseeable future as my girlfriend has a career and for the time being I am going to stay at home taking care of her children. Also, would I be entitled to free health / dental care and so on?

Any advice/ help would be very much appreciated,
Thanks,
RD Cool

Unless the law's changed since I was last in Germany - which was several years ago, admittedly - everybody living in Germany is expected to register their address with the police, whether they're German or foreign; and I think the time limit is much shorter than three months, more like a week.

If you're a British citizen then you're entitled to work in Germany on the same basis as German citizens.

Your entitlement to health care is a bit more complex. You won't be eligible for the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC - replacement for the old Form E111) if you're moving to live in Germany permanently. I'm not sure exactly how you'd go about arranging health cover; the Allgemeine Ortskrankenkasse (AOK) would probably be the best place to start, but your girlfriend will be better placed to advise on that than I am!

Viel Glück! Wink

Yes you have to register, not at the police, but at the Einewohnermeldeamt or ion the Rathaus, depending on the size of your community.

It should be withing 1 week.

BUT,

Its now no longer a requirement to get a residents permit.

Hello there,
I'd be really interested to find out how things went in the end. I'm an EU citizen moving to Germany with my (German) partner in March and I'm not sure how soon I'll be getting a job.
I'm currently wading through the internet looking for clues to health insurance; particularly whether I could share my partners' health insurance or whether we'd have to be married. Alternatively, whether it'd be possible to get an "affordable" type of insurance due to low - or no - income.
Any info would be very gratefully received. Thanks!
