We live in a small village in SW France. My neighbour has a tree which over the past 5 years has grown very tall and now blocks our sunlight for most of the day. We have approached him and asked if he would trim the tree to allow sunlight into our garden. We have offered to pay for the work. Our neighbour says it is illegal to cut down trees in France? Does anyone know how we stand legally? Question

I believe it is illegal to cut down olive trees, but I know it can be done. We used to pass a plot of land covered in ancient Olive trees - the children named it the enchanted forest because they were so old and gnarled - but one day we passed and all the olive trees had gone. On further investigation we learned that the Mayors son had got planning permission for a modern villa!!!!!!!!

A visit to the Mairie may be necessary to find out if the tree is protected.
