I am over retirement age & in the process of paying the local taxes & would like to know if there is any relief on the above for retired expats residing in France - experience / advice

There is relief for pensioners, but it is means-tested. I don't think most of us qualify. You'll need to visit your local Hotel des Impots to find out the detials.
