This year is the 500th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar. Not many people know that, but the British Tourist Authority is trying to spread the word. This is SeaBritain 2005. It is a year-long promotion of the Uk's maritime heritage, and among it's principal sponsors are the Maritime Museum, and BBC History magazine, the latter doing a "special" this spring.

When BBC History's list of proposed venues was issued, Clarkie couldn't help but note that none were north of Hadrian's wall. Clarkie challenged this, as you would expect, and as a result was commissioned to do a piece on RRS Discovery.

Not HMS, as I thought it was called. It is a Royal Research Ship, and it carried Captain Robert Falcon Scott and his team of scientists to Antarctica. Despite being ice-bound for two winters, this sturdy ship brought them home, and went on to even greater things.

I won't bore you with more details here - though I may yet bore you with a piece on the subject for BE.

Meantime

and

Mike

Yes I love the red ruts, crooked fence posts and the way they lead you to the tree. That could have been taken here, our soil is deep red, and is very hard to wash out, should it get onto clothing and even concrete.

I also love the ships masts at night, gives it a ghostly aura IMO.

... and I was talking about mood as a component of good pics the other day. BE is going to have a fantastic collection of e-cards at this rate. Photo of the week choice will be a different target on two counts: the small size at which it is displayed, and topicality.

I'm still searching for my original of what I consider to be one of my better mood pics. Until I find it, take a look here, at the first pic - two barefoot boys.
Link to my stock photos

Click on the pic to see it enlarged. Now where were those instructions for posting long URLs without forcing wide screen viewing?

Hi Mike

I can't remember offhand, but the way to do it is by using the URL button, with syntax like this:

Text describing your link

I've taken the liberty of editing your post in the meantime. Hope that's OK Smile

And the winner is...!

Mike Clark's photo of the RRS Discovery. It's a great photo and has visual impact even at a very small size. I also confess to having a preference for photos in portrait format, and if they contain a lot of blue then that's even better.

It's not necessarily a case of choosing the "best" photo, it's getting the right one for the home page.

Next week is BE's birthday and Alan's clown is top contender at the moment...

All the best for the MSc, Kay. I've read up a bit on the Google sandbox, and now I'm going to concentrate on (relevant) links from established sites. I ought to submit to DMOZ, too.

First, I've put links from two or three places in Freebooters, and now I'm going to switch URLs in my BE forum sig. I'll tell you what, if any, effect that has in a few days.
