Prompted by a discussion within
this topic on the Malta Forum, Kay and I have just forked out 79p to get the Cryin' Shames' version of The Drifters' "Please Stay" off iTunes. I couldn't remember the song, and Kay couldn't remember who sang it. But the Cryin' Shames got to No.26 in 1966, and the Drifters' version got nowhere in the UK charts.
Well, we've just listened to it, and it was well worth 79p... for all the wrong reasons. Now I know where Vic Reeves got the inspiration for the "club singing" round on
Shooting Stars. Kay's face is aching from laughing so much.
They certainly don't make them like that any more!
PS: the artwork of the album it featured on -
Mersey Beat - featured a VW Kombiwagen on the front. Oddly, it still had all four wheels on.
