The BBC has an interesting story here.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-16631597

I was wondering how these figures would compare with other countries. For example, I've seen data to suggest that Washington DC has the most traffic accidents in the USA - but how are they measuring "most"? In absolute terms, per capita, or what?

How's the driving where you live? Better still, if you think they're all crazy drivers, have you any decent stats to back that up?

Interesting, as usual from the "Go Figure" series. It just goes to show that you should always look at exactly what statistic you're being fed and, if possible, get other stats to give you a fuller picture.

I wasn't hugely surprised to see that Greater London was safer than Northumberland per 10 million hours of driving, in terms of fatalities; I'd expect the lower average speeds to mean fewer casualties among drivers. But I would be interested to see the mortality rates for pedestrians and cyclists in the two areas - London drivers often seem to be oblivious to these soft targets.
