There's an interesting article in the HBR (Harvard Business Review) about Does your job title get the job done?

Also the Economist's article mentioned in the first para is worth a read. (Haven't yet read the others which were linked to in the HBR article.)

Amusing? Yes. But also interesting. I think it makes a lot of sense to give people unusual job titles - but only in some cases. Not, I think, so much for the more menial type of job. The concept could easily be overdone.

What do you think? And if you could choose your own job title, what would it be?

Terrible proofreading. "Minster of Progress"? Why not "Cathedral of Change"? Laughing

I'm not sure what job title I could get away with. Deputy Supreme Ruler of the BE Universe doesn't quite cut it somehow. Hiding

Not in my world, I've had so many different titles in the past 20 years, but I still have the same job and do the same things. Now if the pay varied as much as the titles did, then I might be more interested in what I was called. Currently I'm a professional practice leader, which I'm told is just below a manager but above a peer supervisor--semantics. I guess they have to pay me more if they call me a manager, even though that's what I do...

A bit like Mission Statements. A good, crisp one works wonders - but a meandering, weak one tells people more about the company than they would like it to...

(Just caught the typo in time to save my own bacon on this one...)

My wife successfully sold real estate for many years. Finally she decided to take some time off, that time developing into full retirement as she loved it so much. When we moved across the country some years ago we established a new account at a new bank. The bank officer there filled out the forms for us across the desk. When it came to my wife's occupation, she responded "Domestic Goddess", with a very straight face. And that's what he entered on the form. He wanted our business after all.
Ecstatic in paradise.
