I'll try but at the moment the forum has taken over and will not be closed or minimised. I have to keep restarting the computer!
I am interested in living on Malta or Gozo in the fairly near future and would like to make contacts as a prelude to this.

I've replied to your other topic on the FAQ - hopefully that may help.

Keith, I think I see your problem - I turned on Compatibility mode while viewing the site in Internet Explorer 8, and everything suddenly went wrong. The new site was written with modern browsers in mind and so doesn't need fixes to make it work for IE8.

The best way of fixing this is for you to go to "Compatibility View Settings" in the Tools menu of your browser and either:

a) untick the box titled "Display all websites in Compatibility View"

or

b) highlight "britishexpat.com" and click the "Remove" button if individual websites are listed.

I'd strongly recommend (a) - Microsoft created Compatibility View so that sites written for Internet Explorer 6 and earlier (which were non-standards compliant browsers) would still work with IE 7 and IE 8 (which are much closer to being standards-compliant). But most websites these days use modern code and shouldn't need the fix - you can always manually add the ones that do need it.

Thanks, but I can't see any 'Compatibility view settings' in the tools menu of my browser. I'll have to get the IT guys to have a look. I've never had this sort of problem with any other website before.

It sounds as if your systems admin people have made the setting globally, Keith. In that sort of situation, as you say, you would need to take it up with them - or else use a standards-compliant browser such as Firefox, Safari or Chrome if available. Good luck!

Edit: I gather Firefox has solved your problems Smile

It's definately a browser problem.

I suspect this may have been because IE was shut down while in full screen mode - it then opens in full screen mode automatically, so whenever IE is opened again it takes up the entire screen and hides the Start button.

If anyone else experiences the same problem, pressing F11 again should do the trick. Nothing we're doing, I assure you Smile
