To be honest, I've never used an avatar-generating site myself. The photo of me is hosted at Gravatar (www.gravatar.com) because I use it fairly widely and using Gravatar is a good way of doing that - the avatar is associated with your email address and gets added automatically on sites which are compatible with Gravatar.
Kay's avatar is a professionally designed logo uploaded onto our server here.
If your collection of letters and numbers begins with
http:// then it's a URL (Uniform Resource Locator - or "web address") and you can add it in the box on your profile page titled "Link to off-site Avatar".
Good luck, anyway - you'll get there in the end, I'm sure.
