the standard of dentistry in Gozo is high, and very reasonably priced

Can vouch for Gozomark's reply had dental work done here which was too expensive in the uk, got to say it is the best dentist I have ever had. Would have cost £400 sterling in UK better treatment here for approx £150sterling brilliant. Laughing

I've split subsequent Q&A off as they didn't have anything to do with working in Malta.

Please ask questions on the appropriate boards for the question rather than simply tacking them inappropriately onto an earlier one - that way the information's easier to find, and thus more useful, for other readers. Thanks!

If it helps, my experience of maltese dentists is a bit variable, with some just about OK and cheap, others good but pricier.

If it helps, I had a porcelain veneered steel crown fitted by "everybody's favourite Gozo dentist - see other dentistry threads) for Lm 150. He suggested that if I ended up needing an implant, that would cost about 700Lm from memory. Thats about the same as I was quoted in Australia about 3 years ago, so I would suspect that your specialist work would bring in a good living here if you can build a good reputation quickly. That's assuming that there is actually enough high value work to go round.

You will be fighting the fact that a large percentage of Maltese probably have friends and/or extended family already working in the general dentistry field. I would also suspect (no real foundation for this other than experience of living in small communities most of my life) that these dentists are more likely to refer their patients to a Maltese specialist.

I would also have to say that a large percentage of, particularly middle aged, Maltese do not have a good grasp of English, so if you don't speak Maltese, your target market will be significantly reduced.

Hope this helps.

Do you do all the other normal type dentistry ?

If so Will you compete with the Maltese Dentists ?

If so i think you would do very well with the large Ex pat community in Malta/Gozo

I still have fillings that were done in 1963 by a Maltese dentist, and have found even nowadays that Maltese / Gozitan dentista are VERY good, and far more reasonably priced than UK dentists.

Would i go to another dentist just because they were British ?? err NO !

Err yes...............as soon as CosmeticDentist has gained a reputation which exceeds the very excellent treatment I have received from Maltese dentists and matches their reasonable prices. Also providing that his new surgery is convenient to me.
Recently, on a Friday evening, I had a fall and smashed a front bridge containing six teeth. The following day (yes,a Saturday!) I had an examination in the morning and the local dentist extended his surgery into the afternoon to do a temporary repair. I was in the chair for one and a half hours and the charge was 30 Euro.
Cosmetic dentists are fairly common in Malta and part of the health tourism industry on offer.
I'm sure CosmeticDentist will receive a very warm welcome if he relocates to Malta but whether he can make a living against the competition I would hesitate to forecast.
The problem with this Forum is that it needs more special effects and dance numbers.

Well, as a Brit, I'd frankly stick to a Malta dentist when in Malta!! Only used to pay a couple of Liras there, as much as the NHS at those times. Been to Malta lately, private treatment is still cheaper than UK. Got an extremely high opinion of the dentists in Malta and their clinics are simply beautiful.(My dentist is in Lija! OMG he's charming!). Far from the disgusting pretentious greedy Brits. There is no room for us Brits there. There's a dentist(or two!!) in every town and village in Malta. And you'll probab need to learn Maltese mate!! 8) 8)
