You don't realise how much UK government paperwork has improved in the last 30 years until you try to find something on the Maltese government website. The VAT section won't be winning any plain English awards.

I've tried and failed to find an introduction to VAT there. Certainly can't find any mention of a threshold but if there is one it must be quite low as thinking about it I know a shopkeeper in Gozo who only turns over about €15,000 and had to register.

I think I read something a week ago (in the govt announcement about trying to encourage more potentially self employed women to work/leave black economy), that the threshold is € 7,000 odd

I see it all now...some of it...lol....
what if the goods you import from the uk are zero rated. there but not here...do you add vat to what you paid at wholsale,,l or on the amount you are selling it for...then do you register for vat...but only pay vat if you hit the threshold that I read (somewhere) was 35,000 euros a year ?
If you dont register for vat...you cant claim back any vat you have paid on anything goods or services in the course of you business ?

Never could get my head round the vat thing...glad i had a good accountant in the UK....

I read and read all this stuff and I,m still shaking my head.....Smile

Seems there are many different thresholds. Is there a government website for tax / VAT etc?
