Terrakka wrote:Got to the ADT this morning and I took a chance of printing the form that SteveGill posted here and completed it! Just on the off chance that there would be a queue and I would have to get the original form, walk away, complete it and queue again - but no, they accepted the form as I had printed it. She said it would take a few weeks and I was in and out in 10 minutes.

That's brilliant Laughing If I'd known, I'd have tried to produce better quality copies! Mr. Green

Pleased it worked out ok. Let us know how long it takes - I'll need to get mine sorted shortly.

@ GM - no, no doctors report required so far, but I assume at this stage they wont ask for one.

In that case, AFAIK they won't ask for one at all

received a letter from TM this morning confirming my application - so I will keep that in the car in case I am stopped as my driving licence will expire end of next week.
Anyone any thoughts about the legality of me driving after my licence expires BUT me having applied for a Maltese EU licence prior to the expiry? Just wondering what will happen if I am pulled over or happen up a police road stop.
Two police officers on bikes were parked up at the Portomaso roundabout a couple of weeks ago and had stopped a car and stopped me also. He asked for my ID card and driving licence. I handed him my ID card first and as I was fishing around for my licence the guy walked around the car checking road tax and registration plates. When he returned I offered him my licence and he said 'dont worry about it, off you go now"! He didnt even ask for the logbook to prove I was the legal owner.

Terrakka, provided you have documentary proof of your old licence AND can prove (in writing) that you have already applied for a new Maltese one then you should be fine.

Problems would only arise if you were legally disqualified from driving on the old licence prior to (or during) the renewal process.

correct, but also means if you are stopped by the police for speeding or whatever, they only have 2 choices, let you go, or lock you up to appear in court the next day. A UK licence gives them a 3rd option, points

Motoring question
In June we have someone coming over with a 1 year old child; I will collect them from Luqa with a hire car

Regarding Child / baby seats; is it law in Malta to have them ?

got yet another letter from ADT / Transport Malta last Tuesday asking me to bring in my old licence, ID card and Eur52.50 payment for a ten year licence. Arrived at 7.30 this morning - two people in front of me who were dealt with quickly. I handed over the documents and payment, received a receipt for payment and was told that I would be contacted by the end of the week (cant remember if she said by phone or letter - but she did ask for mobile number so maybe phone) and my licence would be ready for collection. I did think as soon as she said I would have to come back that this is a pain in the you know whats - but she did say "dont queue - just skip the queue and come to me and say you are here to collect your licence."
And I was also told that although my licence is now with the ADT I can drive using the receipt and show that if I am stopped for any reason etc.
So not as painless as I thought Smile

Yep, once you know the procedure, red tape in Malta is actually quite limited for this and in most dealings with the govt.

Transport Malta seem to have a new website and the process for exchanging any licence is here - http://www.transport.gov.mt/land-transport/driving/exchanging-your-foreign-driving-licence
