Hi, I'll be staying in Malta on and off during the next year. Probably maximum continuous stay of about 2 months. Can i just keep using my EHIC card or would anyone familiar with the system recommend some basic private health insurance as well?

thanks

Hi Issy, and welcome to the forum Smile

EHIC is only for tourists, which means individual stays of up to three months, so you should be OK. However, EHIC wouldn't include evacuation back to your home country, so you might want to look at travel insurance as well.

If you were to stay in Malta for a total of more than 6 months in 12, the UK might consider you as no longer resident in the UK and so no longer eligible for an EHIC.

Thanks.
I suppose, strictly speaking, it's the same if i move around Europe generally for more than 6 months out of 12.

would you happen to know how much a visit to a Maltese GP generally costs without insurance if i can't use the EHIC?

"I suppose, strictly speaking, it's the same if i move around Europe generally for more than 6 months out of 12. " - as far as the UK is concerned, yes

Maltese GP - € 10-20 generally

hi
just wondering which of these provides the best service. I've studied both policies and [company name removed] fits my needs better (and is cheaper) but the real test comes if one has to make a claim!
Am moving to malta for a year and would welcome anyone's experience of either.
many thanks

issy, I've edited your post because effectively you're asking for a recommendation, and we don't allow those on the public boards. If you want to discuss the merits of individual suppliers, you'll need to subscribe for Premium Membership - £25 per annum to subscribe, with 50% going to Gozo SPCA. More details here.

If you are going to become resident, if you are a UK passport holder you can also use the RHA (reciprocal health arrangement), an agreement between Malta nad the UK

If you have recently been paying national insurance in another EU countries, you can often transfer tyhose rights for up to 2 1/2 years, giving access to the Maltese healthcare system under the same terms as a Malteses citizen (transferrable through S1 certificate)
