Hi all,

I have a job lined up in Malta and hope to move in around 3 Months.

i would like to take 2 vehicles with me:

2008 hyundia i30cw
2008 husaberg fe450

the hyundia, being left hand drive worried me, but i've read on here that importing/driving these LHD cars is techincally allowed, so thats great.

Also, i've gone through the calculator and determined that it would cost us roughly 2,100 euro for registration tax. Which from what i read, its refundable after proof of 1 year residence.

So the car seems easy enough... But the bike, that's a little more difficult as i can't seem to find much info online.

The Online calculator doesn't seem to work, and i have no idea if Malta would accept the bike into the country.

Does anyone have any idea on this?

Thanks!!

jeff (Canadian, living in Iceland, moving to Malta!)

Hi Jeff, and welcome to the forum Smile

"Also, i've gone through the calculator and determined that it would cost us roughly 2,100 euro for registration tax. Which from what i read, its refundable after proof of 1 year residence. " - not sure where you read that, but its not refundable

bike - no problem with bringing motorbike in, but you will have to pay reg tax on that as well.

the following thread is a good starting point - see 9 for importing a vehicle - check to see if you are exempt from paying the reg tax on your vehicles

thx for the reply mark!

ahhhh, silly me... that one isn't refundable, its the 1200 euro for the shipping container/personal effects (I think thats what its called).

sadly, we've only been here in Iceland for about a year and a half Sad Need to have owned the vehicles for 2 years to not pay.

We're close on the car, but i only bought the bike 2 months ago.

I checked out that thread, but i'll go through it again and see if I can find more questions Smile

cheers

jeff

Importing them is no problem, just get the lights adjusted, but driving them on the Maltese roads might be a completely different story. Even in RHD the sight lines at junctions are non-existent and Maltese drivers don't even attempt to follow the highway code!!

Don't know how long you plan on staying but the re-sale market for LHD cars would be very limited too.
