Can anyone offer any advice please?

We have recently come out of a long let, and handed the keys into the estate agent. We had not heard anything from the landlord, however today he has sent a message saying that if we dont pay money into his account today for the final electricity/water bills, he will report us to the police and give our passport numbers which will restrict travel in and out of Malta? We have paid our rent as well as 100euros per month towards bills. He agreed to us coming out of our lease early, though said we should forfeit our bond because of it? As he kept the bond shouldnt the final bills be taken from that? Also, we have not seen any final bill, nor has a figure been given to us as to what we should pay.

Where do we stand? What can they do? Are they just trying to frighten us?

You shouldn't settle the final bill until you've seen it. How does he expect you to pay it if he hasn't told you the amount ?

If you've forfeited your bond, then, no it shouldn't come out of that, but needs to be paid on top. Whether you should forfeit your bond, what does your lease say ? I would go to the agent you rented through, and speak to them

"he will report us to the police and give our passport numbers which will restrict travel in and out of Malta" - no it won't - he would need to take you to court - immigration can't stop you without a court order

That's great, thanks Mark. I didnt think it would affect our travel etc. Think they trying to scare us. If and when they send me final bills on email we will look at it. They have our email address but I havent given our forwarding new address.

Ask him to scan and email the final bill from ARMS - don't settle anything until you see this

Oh, and make sure the readings given to ARMS are the same as the readings you took when to left the flat

I will. I'm going to wait to see if I hear anymore from him, then as you said will ask him for the bills to prove what is owed by us. Thanks Mark.

In an earlier post you said you were quitting the flat as it wasn't as promised - I would speak to the agent about this, as this could be a reason for you to get your bond back
