Could someone please confirm the correct way of switching from UK to Maltese insurance? Is this the correct procedure:

1) Drive over using current UK insurance
2) Take out a Maltese insurance explaining that I will provide no-claims proof as soon as possible
3) Cancel UK insurance and get proof of no-claims
4) Pass no-claims to Malteses insurance who adjust the premium to reflect this.

This is just based on my experience moving from Germany to the UK. Is there a different/better way? Cancel the insurance before leaving and have some kind of temporary insurance (just for the journey) ?

Hi,

My dad got the European extension from the UK to drive in Europe for 30 days. Before the 30 days expired he rang the UK insurance company, explained the situation and asked for proof of no claims, then he went to the local Maltese insurance company and proceeded as you have stated.

Thanks Red,

I just found out that for a used car I have 30 days to register (thought it was only 5). So I'll have time to cancel the UK insurance before starting with Maltese insurance and registration.

If you are a tourist (ie not a resident), you have 6 months before the car needs to leave
