Hi, just wondering if anyone has recently gone through this process. We are just about to. I need to know if the registration tax quoted on the official web site is what you get charged - I have heard people say that they have been charged far more. Not sure if this is an urban myth along with 'if you get stopped with UK plates your car will be towed, even if there are people in it, one woman had a child in the car and they still took it'. We are within the 6 month window to register, had all docs in car - insurance, ferry ticket etc, we got stopped and they couldn't have been nicer, said we had six months from date of entry to sort it, so no problem.

Anyway - anyone's recent experience welcome.

Thanks,

R XX

We are going through is at the moment, we are applying for exemption though. All the paperwork is done and we have a letter to say that a decision will be made about the application by may.
My partner had a bump in his car last week and the police and warden were involved (other driver didn't have a valid tax disc) and we didn't even have the letter from the transport people to acknowledge the application, we were on English plates with Maltese insurance and that seems ok. The police were fine about him showing his ID card and driving on English plates.

Can't help with the cost of tax though. Sorry.

Hi Sarah,

Do you mind telling me the grounds you are using for exemption?

Thanks,

Rachel

Thats very interesting, as I thought that was a big no-no (having Maltese ID card driving a UK registration car).

I had my car registered recently but my landlord kindly organised it all - an absolute star. Total costs were approx 10% higher than the expected import fee from the website but I can't remember all the details - it included the VRT, MOT equiv fee etc.

We applied for exemption on the grounds that we have owned the car for about 5 years in uk.
All the paper work has been sorted, approval for the exemption has gone through, the vehicle has been checked by the inspectorate and it has had its VRT. And today all the paperwork has gone in to import so just now waiting a couple of weeks for the Maltese log book and plates.
It was a very painless process thanks to Joanny Spiterri in Gozo.
