Hi all please help me I am about to sell my car in the UK before moving out but due to the change in the system out there I am not sure if I might be better off importing?!!

I have now don't laugh a Fiesta 1995 reg: N Registered 1996 I believe QUARTZ. when I have calculated on the link I have found on here it says it would roughly cost me 565 euros for the registration Value is this all I would have to pay or is there VAT and things to be put on top of this? Please help me I have tried to fatham it out but I am so confused..

Thanks in advance for any help it's appreciated. Jodie

The reg value you identified is the basis for taxation, not the tax due. The CO2 figure is unlisted for your car but based on some assumptions you would have to pay less than EUR 180 reg tax and around EUR 324 Annual circulation tax to put it on the road. There will be some other expenses (putting it through a VRT test) but there should be no VAT.

Remember that thee figures are based on numerous assumptions and that the registration value you got off the web site is subject to verification and change by the ADT as per their caveat
Quote:
The final Registration Value of a motor vehicle, on which registration tax is due, will be determined on the day of registration of that particular vehicle
Wink

If you have had he car for 2 years and expect to keep it for three years in Malta then you may be able to pay zero reg tax. Bear in mind that you would still have to pay the ACT at over 300 Eur/year Sad

Thank you I am a little clearer now maybe I am best buying out in Malta do you think?

"around EUR 324 Annual circulation tax" - is this what road tax is called in Malta?

I have owned my car for nearly 3 years and would intend on keeping it till it fell apart if I was to import it.

Wouldthe only expense be vrt if so is there a set rate in malta or does this vary?

Yes, the annual road tax has been renamed to annual circulation tax.

You would have to pay the ACT as you register it as well as having to get it through a VRT test. The test fee is around EUR 31 inclusive of VAT (Can anyone quote the exact fee please?) but you should be prepared to pay for some repairs etc. Wink

As a new immigrant to Malta and having owned your car for two years then para A.15 of the new regulations would appear to give exempt you from registration tax if you keep the car in Malta for three years, do not dispose of it, lend it or hire it out. This would in essence commit you to paying the ACT for the next three years too. You may be better off paying the reg tax and having the option to sell it after you have moved.

I don't feel qualified to advise on whether you should bring it or sell it before you move as their are so many factors involved, not the least of which is how you get it and yourself here!

Not high emissions, GM, the high ACT stems from post 2009 registration and the age. EUR 295 is the cheapest for a 14 year old car registered after 1st Jan 2009 versus Eur 102 for vehicles registered before 2009.

I misunderstood the table then - I thought the 14+ referred to 2014 and beyond, which is clearly rubbish Embarassed

also means the tax on my 25 year old motorbike is € 66 not the € 56 I read it to be - think I can live with that , as I can with the € 92 not € 88 on my 12 year old car
