Hi,

I will be looking for a property with several bedrooms aswell as a pool. It is definately not a problem to be in the more calm Gozo rather than Malta so I presume this is where I will end up. My question relates to the choice for a pool or not as it may have a big impact on the price aswell as electricity costs (or is no pool in gozo heated?).

What would be an educated guess for the monthly surplus cost in terms of rent and general upkeep of a pool?

A pool adds alot - how much depends on the size of the pool (many are plunge pools only) - probably € 100 upwards a month on the rent, and € 50 upwards for electricity and chemicals, € 50 odd for a guy to keep it clean. If you want the water heated, that would be extra, and could be alot more. We have a pool, but very rarely use it, as swim in the sea, and wouldn't buy/rent a place with a pool a 2nd time round

You can swim in the sea from May-Dec (water temp 20C and above), and can join up at a 5* hotels leisure facilities for 6 months a year for about € 300 odd, and use their pool

- which months are you planning on being in Gozo ?

I would most likely come over from march/april of next year onwards and my partner (that would probably come with me for at least part of my stay) loves the ocean so that might be an option aswell. I have gotten in touch with some of the real estate agencies and will let them know when we will be arriving.

We will see I guess, but I just don't want to spend 200€/month for 5 days of swimming.

so, if you do the cleaning etc yourself, and don't heat the pool, about €50 month running costs. There's then ongoing maintenance

Benny: If you read the stuff near the top of the page, you know, the place where it says: IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE POSTING ANYTHING, then you wouldn't need to be mystified about PMs and about how this place works.

Anyway, if you have questions, suggestions or problems about how it works, they belong on the FAQ board, and not on the Malta Housing/Property board.

You've had a lot of help on here, particularly from Mark. But you have given nothing in return. You've not even done us the courtesy of reading our rules and guidelines. Please don't take threads off topic in future with questions or comments about how the forum does or doesn't work.

Hello, this info was really useful. What gems you all are!

Am I right in assuming that the costs relate to home owners? If renting a property with a pool would the upkeep/maintenance be covered by the landlord and we would only have to pay the electricity to heat it?

Must say I agree with Mark and would prefer to dip in the sea but as we intend to start with just a 6 month rent until were sure of an area thoght it might be nice for visitors Very Happy

"Am I right in assuming that the costs relate to home owners? If renting a property with a pool would the upkeep/maintenance be covered by the landlord and we would only have to pay the electricity to heat it?" - it all depends on the lease -

ps not many people heat their pool - electricity is needed for the pump

Heat the pool?? They'd have to run new power lines to Gaddafiland. Unless you are fabulously wealthy forget that one.
Firstly, as a tenant you may struggle to get you name on the lecky bill and will have to pay over the odds for power. And the 'odds' are already exorbitant!
Secondly the tenant with a 'long let' (six months+) lease is normally responsible for all pool costs including cleaning and chemicals. Weekly cleaning during the season and less regularly off season will cost around €15 a time plus chemicals. You can 'do it yourself' but make sure you know what you're doing in case you kill off the visitors. Some landlords will insist that you employ a pool boy.
Unheated pools are normally usable from May(ish) to October(ish) although there will be some bright sparks on here who will tell you they use them all year round.
Hope this helps. Coffee at the 'puter Mr. Green
