this is taken from latest FAQ site

REGISTRATION TAX
AND
ANNUAL CIRCULATION
LICENCE FEES GUIDELINES
Effective as of 1st January 2009

I reside outside Malta and I will be transferring my residence to Malta. If I
bring my vehicle with me what will be the amount of Registration tax that I
have to pay?
If you bring your vehicle permanently into Malta when transferring your
residence from a place outside Malta to a place in Malta you will not pay any
registration tax subject to the following conditions, and subject to proof of all
the these conditions as requested by the Authority for verification:
a) You shall have been residing outside Malta for at least twenty four
months;
b) The motor vehicle has been in your possession for at least twenty-four
months before the change of residence;
c) It had been acquired under the general conditions of taxation in force in
that other country and is registered in your name;
d) No such exemption shall be given to a person who had gone to live
outside Malta primarily for the purpose of pursuing a course of studies, or
who had been working outside Malta on a task of duration of less than
two years and his personal ties remained in Malta;
e) The said exemption shall apply to no more than one motor vehicle owned
by you;
f) The motor vehicle cannot be disposed of, hired out or lent during a
period of 36 months following its importation or its bringing into Malta,
except in circumstances duly justified to the satisfaction of the Authority;
g) The registration of such motor vehicle must be processed within 12
month of the individual’s transfer of residence.

"g) The registration of such motor vehicle must be processed within 12
month of the individual’s transfer of residence"

so i can drive it for 12 months without registering my vehicle owned for more than 24 months??

It says "must be processed within 12 month of the individual’s transfer of residence", not "drive it for 12 months"

ie the clock starts from when you transfer your residence, not from when the car arrives. It also says processed within, not started by, so it depends on how long it takes to process.

this is the bit that interests me. So it is from when you change your residence (is that same as getting ID card or at least applying? ) rather than when it leaves UK. Thank you for bringing THAT to my attention Twisted Evil

So if i am correct as long as it has been registered within 12 months from the start date of your Malta ID then you are ok. does this apply if i buy a car in uk now, drive it down, then as long as ive paid the tax and registered it within this 12 month period i am ok? so to play it safe i can start process after 10 months. money is tight at the moment, i cant afford the registration tax but i wil be able to after a few months.

has anyone driven a uk car over by ferry? do you need to visit Department of Transport in Floriana.to get paper work to drive it here (as long as it insured and taxed in uk) or can you just drive off the ferry. this bit of info was n the post deleted by the moderator

i know im being a bit of a pain but money is very tight for me untill i secure a good job i cannot aford the 1800 euro tax i will have to pay on a car im buying for 2500 sterling in uk, which would be about 9000 euro if i bought it here! trying to find a way round it.

thanks for the advise

i think i will go down and ask. well even with the tax i can still get much more from my money buying one in uk and driving down. so to get this right if not owned longer than 24 months you have to have it registered within 15 days. if you have owed it more than 24 months you get 12 months to process?

Didn't really expect anything else from politicians Frustration

Wonder what this means for the 'standardised' registration throughout the EU currently being debated in Brussels!!

ok, have read through it all, but still a bit confused!

I arrived in gozo this week. I have already applied for my ID card. I drove here via the ferries. Do I have to start to register my car this week? Does it need the local equivalent of MOT before I can register it?

Am I allowed to drive the car while it is not registered here, as I have applied for my ID card?

Oh, and I've only owned the car for about 17 months.

Looking at what docs you need to present for the car to be inspected and registered, looks like you need your ID card, but I won't actually have this in my hand until about 2 weeks time.

Sorry if I'm being a bit thick, but I don't want to get it wrong and am feeling a bit anxious and confused!!

can only answer some

Yes you need VRT (MOT), but you don't need ID card - can use passport instead.
