Hi
Does anyone know about the costs of scrapping a car in Malta? I've done some research and haven't found any concise information.
I'm thinking of the worst case scenario here, if my car falls to bits after importing and registering it!
If I needed to leave the island, or I couldn't afford repairs, I'd like to know if I can scrap it...
Also, am I right in thinking you can't sell or give it away within 3 years of registering it?
Any info greatly appreciated!

scrapping cost - not sure, but someone would prob buy it for spares anyway [edit] - following post from Dec 2008 quotes € 27 for scrapping

you can't sell or give it away within 3 years of registering it - not heard that before - where did you see that, as it doesn't sound right to me

Hi
I've just been looking into what to do with it, if it falls apart within the 3 years if I need to get rid of it, without selling..
I can't get any info, not heard of €27 Euros to scrap it either...

I'd been told on the grapevine that I couldn't sell it, after registering it with the ADT, for at least 3 years.. and I've been trying to get through to the transport section all week to iron out some of these things!

Thanks

If you register your car tax free you can not sell or let anyone else drive it (apart from spouse at the same given address) for three years. You may sell within this period if you can find a buyer that will pay the registration tax.

Great, so if I pay the registration tax, I can then sell it if I need to.
That sounds good to me!
If that is the absolute truth then I'm happy knowing that!
Cheers

Wow! That's really helpful. An idiot posting from the USA, who has never heard of Malta, wants to recommend a car scrapping company in London to you. Rolling Eyes

(BTW, we just remove most of the spams, but a bit of visible moderation doesn't hurt just to let you know we keep this place clean for you and to let spammers know that they're not tolerated on here.)

Let's get back on topic.

Kay, this was the kind of posting I was looking for as a newbie to like a forum! Visible moderation with a sense of humour, so nice. In order not to be classified as a total spammer I try get back to topic. Mark´s link did not give me an answer to what it costs to scrap a car, or I did not read carefully enough... Of course cars must be scrapped in Malta. I read everywhere that people own more cars per capita in Malta than in most countries in Europe. Some get smashed, some just die, normal. With the shipping industry I guess it is easy and profitable also to send the scrap to China. I also read that there are a lot of older British cars being well kept, of course parts are precious, Cuba with Cortinas? If you want to cut me with your spam knife or NOT, feel free, just wanted to show appreciation Smile

As long as the car is registered in Malta, scrapping is either cheap, or more likely worth maybe € 50 as someone will take it off your hands for spares - the problem is where it isn't registered locally

It costs an admin fee of 20 to 30 euros to scrap your car, you have to take your registration plates, registration document and latest tax disc to the a.d.t.( transport Malta centre )and hand them in at the scrappage desk, they will fill in the relevant form for you to sign, this is a declaration of ownership form also stating that the car will never be used on the road again, the registered owner must sign this document, you also have to pay any road tax and outstanding fines due on the vehicle, Don't delay this part too long, ours was 1 day out of tax and it cost us 10 euro. Took about 3 hours.

Mark and Dave: I expected something like this, cheap and straight forward, depending on how you do it and who you talk to. I was not was not talking about foreign cars. I guess the key issue is to get your name off any paperwork, otherwise that "scrapped" car will hunt you for years, as it happens in Spain to many people. In Malta it seems possible. Another good answer for Malta, thumbs up! Smile
