It's quite amazing that actors playing such small roles should still be receiving all that attention for it nearly 40 years on. Good for them. :-)

But I wonder what it is about sci-fi that lends itself to that? Why do Star Wars, Star Trek and similar films and TV programmes spawn conventions and not, say, Westerns? Or is there a flourishing Clint Eastwood "Man With No Name" fan club that I've missed?
