Sorry for the delay in responding Steve, it has been a fraught & busy two weeks. It continues to be busy but fortunately, some of the 'family' pressures are now back in the UK!!
I would say that getting a job with the entertainments staff in a hotel here is nigh on non existent!! The Dominican entertainers are (generally) far more extrovert than us Brits (even us O.T.T. extrovert Brits!!) & work for a monthly salary that wouldn't let us go out for an evening meal with a couple of friends!! They tend to 'supplement' their income by chatting up, seducing & generally prostituting themselves for a few extra US dollars every day!! (Hey, ..... sounds like MY kind of job as long as I can keep them young!!).
What line of 'Entertainment' are you involved with? Stand up comedian?? There are enough of those involved in politics here right now & the forthcoming election (May 2008) will bring a few more to the television screens!! Musicians tend to be fairly standard in the Latino style, MAYBE you could get something in the classical bent with one of the better orchestras but I have no connections in that arena I'm afraid. A few questions might elicit someone who knows someone who used to be a ............ - but no promises on that.
Pub Business is a (poorly paid) possibility if you have something unique to offer, it really depends upon your expertise. I might be able to introduce you to a local group - but they tend to work for drinks & fun only.
Have you considered talking to the cruise ship companies? Those operating with their home port in Puerto Rico might be prepared to employ someone who has made a base in the DR. Mind you, if you are Steve G. from France (as opposed to UKSteve from the UK), you already know all the contacts in that business - if you are not Steve G. maybe I could get him to contact you with some thoughts on the cruise liner business??
So, come back on here or by e-mail to me if you prefer (see my webpage
www.casabush.org for contact details) with your specialty in entertainment & we'll take it from there!
In the meantime .................................................
