Cost of Living and Safety in Luanda

Postby zeclever » Mon 22 Sep 2008 13:00 GMT

Hi there !

I am moving to Angola with wife and two teens.
Is Angola safe ?
Can one stay out at night ?
Moneywise how much would a family of 4 need for a decent living ?

Any help would be appreciated .

Jo

Your questions are tough to answer without more detailed information about your exact circumstances.

Rather than put everything on the forum, drop me an email at derekmines@hotmail.co.uk and I'll help you as much as I can

Permanent relocation

Postby Eljar » Sat 25 Apr 2009 09:30 GMT

Hi All,

I will be relocating to Luanda end of June 09, I've been following the blogs on relocating, cost of living, safety etc. The co I'll be working for is providing accomodation, medical aid and transport.

Is there anything else I should be looking out for as I'll be a single female? The obvious secrity issues of not wearing bling in the streets etc. and other fairly common sense things not to do if you're travelling in Africa. Are there security gates at the houses?

On the otherside of things, are there social clubs? What about churches?

I'd really appreciate any help, guidance or direction here.

There are a number of very active social organisations, with meetings most weeks and trips out of Luanda at weekends.

Churches I'm not sure about but can check when I get back in a fortnight.

:D Thank you for your response! Wow :o I'm so glad to hear that I won't become a housemouse up there.

Would you mind elaborating on the social clubs?

I would sincerely appreciate the feedback regarding the churches.

Kind regards

There's an active facebook group for Luanda based expats which organise drinks etc on a regular basis.
There's an expat social club that meets every thursday for drinks and a chat, with a presentation once a month (presentations are on anything from Angola in the 70's to fishing, some are great, others not so much, but the people are good)
There's a running club who meet once a month for a run and drinks

There are also endless parties organised by companies / embassies here, once you've been here for a bit, the invites start coming!

You'll definately not be a housemouse here unless you want to be :-)

Now that sounds AWESOME to say the least!!! It would be a bit like being in a prison for me to be a house mouse! :lol

I truly appreciate your feedback.

I'll be in touch closer to the time and will keep you posted.

Keep well and have a toot for me too!!!

Hi there,

I have just arrived in Luanda and will more than likely be here a good few months, if I can survive!!!!
Please give me some survival tips to make it through. I love to swim, do sport, would love to start tennis and certainly make some friends. I am 33 and single. I work with 2 guys, who are adorable, but I need some girlfriends of any age, status etc. would just like to socialise.
We are currently looking for a house/flat and it looks like we are leaning towards a house in La Ilha.
I can't get over the insane prices here and have no idea how I'll survive there either. I guess others do so I will too!!!!
Please anyone out there get in touch and I would love to make friends asap.
Are there book clubs, theatres, film nights, parties organised etc? I'd appreciate some tips.
Thanks and look forward to meet you all out there.

Luanda Sul social clubs

Postby romana » Thu 24 Sep 2009 22:03 GMT

Tuttifrutti- I tried to PM you but it only allows regular visitors to the forum to do so. I'm 27 and I just moved to Benfica with my boyfriend. The complex we're in has a pool and I am a keen swimmer too so you are welcome to come over for a dip sometime if you would like. Or in any case a coffee in Luanda Sul area sometime?

Same goes for any other women in Luanda Sul area- Please let me know if you know of any social clubs- I'm keen to make more girfriends here too!

Thanks
