would we need private health insurance for doctors and dentists or does NZ have some kind of NHS

Right....

From what I have seen, (having not had to use the health system so far (touch wood)), you do have to pay for GP's visits, prescriptions and dentists. If you are outside of Wellington, you would have to pay for an ambulance (here it runs almost as a charity, so is free at point of need). Emergency hospital visits are free, and if you are referred by your GP, you can get other treatment for free or subsidised.

New Zealand also has the ACC (Accident and Compensation Commission), which provides compensation if you have an accident (you are not allowed to sue another individual for compensation, which gives a wonderfully relaxed attitude compared to the litigation culture that is around in the UK and US!) , however, there are concerns about abuse of the system, and it may be scaled back in the future.

However, having insurance is a good idea, and a lot of employers offer membership (either free or subsidised) of a health insurance as part of their benefits.
