A job in the law - in Malta

Postby BartSlippa » Mon 25 Feb 2013 21:14 GMT

Hi
My wife and I are lawyers in England but with a home in Malta that we regularly visit. We want to move to Malta but would like to continue to work in one capacity or another. However we are a little stuck on what sort of jobs we could realistically apply for. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks in anticipation.

Hi, welcome to the forum.

Would you consider working online?

What are your legal areas of expertise?

Without Maltese language skills your options are limited, but could include advising British expats here on UK legal matters, such as wills.

Malta Law

Hi Kay, yes we would consider on-line work. Current expertise in crime, mental health and family but we have both practised in general common law for many years and could easily move into other areas such as working in-house for a bank or company.

Lawyers

The law firms here lean heavily to employing only Maltese.

Your best bet would be to work for a corporate, trust, or financial service provider. The commercial laws are based on UK law - ie company trusts, financial services.

You only need to speak Maltese if you attend court, which we are not allowed to do (as per our mutual recognition certificate issued by Malta Ministry of Justice).

Hi Expat Barrister

Saw your post. I am a lawyer in Gib at present. Hoping to maybe move. Obviously you know the score re the law. I am going to jump on a flight next Saturday for a week and was wondering if you were perhaps free for a chat.
All the best

Hi Kate, welcome to the forum. Just curious, what attracts you to Malta?

Good luck with your planned move.

Hi Kay, My partner will be enrolling to study at the University there, not to mention it's a beautiful and culture rich city! Quality of life seems very nice compared to the UK!
