Pensions & Health

Postby Malkity » Sun 15 Jun 2008 21:48 GMT

My husband and I are British. We have lived in the USA for 27 years. We are now living in Panama, Central America. We are thinking about re-locating and are looking at Malta. We receive British Government pensions, also USA government pension. We would like to know what the tax liability would be on both our British and USA pension. Also, as we have not lived in Britain for 27 years, would we be eleigable for the EU health care in malta? Any other information any one would care to give us on living in Malta, would be gratefully received! Thank you from down here in Central America!

Hi and welcome to the forum

US and UK govt pensions - this is an issue you really should discuss with an accountant in Malta, as it depends on your particular circumstances

there is no such thing as EU healthcare - each EU country has a different healthcare system - if you moved back to the UK, would you be able to claim free healthcare ? I'm guessing by the fact you receive a UK govt pension then the answer is yes - if so, you will be able to get healthcare in Malta under the same conditions as a Maltese citizen - you should check with the UK govt dept http://www.dwp.gov.uk/ as they will be the final arbiters as to your entitlements - in particular http://www.dwp.gov.uk/international/sa29/

Any other information any one would care to give us on living in Malta, would be gratefully received! can you please be more specific..... (and please post any questions in the relevant forum - you may well find your questions are already answered)

Thank you very much for your answer and links. I will go ahead and look at them and if I have more specific questions, which I'm sure I will, I'll post them in the appropriate place. [/b]
