Joyeux Noël - a true Christmas story

Postby Dave » Thu 25 Dec 2014 08:49

There's an excellent piece in the BBC News website's Magazine section today by the director of the film Joyeux Noël - talking about the 1914 Christmas truce on the Western Front, and how it's been effectively all but forgotten in France, essentially because it didn't fit in with the establishment view of the war:

BBC News: How France has forgotten the Christmas truce soldiers

Apparently he had to resort to subterfuge to be able to even research the relevant files when he was making the film. And from the sound of the article, he didn't even find out the half of it until afterwards, when he was asked to make a documentary and was given freer access to the papers.

Well worth a read. And if you haven't seen the film, do. It's great.
