Kiva - giving the world's poor a leg-up

Postby Dave » Sat 10 Jan 2009 11:58

We've just heard about a great microcredit scheme, Kiva.org, that allows you to lend as little as US$ 25 to a specific low-income entrepreneur of your choice in the developing world.

We think it's such a great way of helping people out of poverty that we've set up a BritishExpat.com team on Kiva.

You can find out more about it on the BE Editor's Blog:

just received this

Dear Mark

This is an update on your loan to Bahodur Mavlyanov in Tajikistan. Thank
you for your loan. It has been disbursed to Bahodur Mavlyanov by IMON
International in Tajikistan. We are excited to watch this business grow.
Over the 12 months of this loan, IMON International will be collecting
repayments from this entrepreneur and posting progress updates on the
Kiva website.

I just got a similar one about the little fishing business in Samoa which I lent to. I see all except one of the BE team's entrepreneurs have raised the funding the required and have now moved into paying back mode.

If anyone here uses LinkedIn there is a Kiva group there, so you can add the group to your profile and give Kiva a little bit more free publiciity.

Thanks, Dave and I thought the video was entertaining as well as informative.

It was a great idea to get a BE lending team started on Kiva. After all, it only takes $25 to make a loan which could quite easily change someone's life.

Amazing! Our team has now raised $750 worth of loans. That's wonderful. Well done folks. I also see that some of the loans are starting to be repaid now. One of them has even been repaid by 25%.

Thanks to all who are joining in!
