According to a BBC story, every year hundreds of thousands of people lose their passports. :roll:

Some 'excuses' are understandable, such as having it taken off you by gunmen, but some are just plain stupid.

What do you think?

Given several million passports, I can believe each of these tales is true. It's all very well asking UK citizens to use alternative means to prove their age, but what? Can't remember whether the new driving licences include your age, but at least they now have a photo...

1. Flying back from Africa unaccompanied, aged about 15, I left my passport on the table in the airport during a short break at Khartoum, and didn't notice until I had got back on the plane. Air hostess retrieved it, but there was a bit of a flap - we were in the middle of the Suez crisis...

2. A few years back, I dropped it on the ground in a small hamlet near here. The woman we'd been talking to found it.

3. More recently, I dropped it on the ground as I got out of my parked car in a local village. Came back half an hour later and it was still there.
