Ray Tomlinson, RIP. Inventor of email

As you send emails today to friends and family far away - and receive quick responses - spare a thought for the man who is credited with inventing it. He died yesterday, aged 74.

Dunno about you but email has been a truly life changing innovation for me. I don't know how we ever managed without it.

I love Ricky Tomlinson. Unfortunately, when I was at my peak of admiration I liked to drop his phrases into conversations. Needless to say some people found it rather inappropriate as they'd never heard of him or the programme.

Inappropriate? My arse.

Last week my landlord wanted me to take some photos of the outside of the house for Enemalta as he was trying to get them to move the electricity cable bracket attached to the house as it was damaging the wall in the wind. He wanted them to put in poles in the pavement. He also wanted me to write a report on the situation which he would be sending to the chairman of Enemalta as although they had agreed to do it and the visting engineers had even put orange markings where they should go they were dragging their heels. He wanted me to write the report as he said my English was better than his, probably true, but why it had to be in English is one of those unanswered questions. Anyway he said to email it all to him.

All this I did and emailed it to him - three times! He's not great on technology but what he was doing is another question as he didn't get them. So I ended up printing off my email and taking it round to him. As I was doing so I thought - it comes to something these days when you have to deliver your emails by hand!

Oh, and the last I heard was that Enemalta had run out of electricity poles!

Great story! It made me laugh even though I felt sympathy for your frustration.

We know of more than one person who has their secretary print out their emails for them. Bizarre!
