MailChimp - closed due to bad weather

Postby Kay » Tue 11 Jan 2011 09:33 GMT

I tried to log in to our MailChimp account today. They're the people who run the software which powers our opt in email list.

The first thing I get is a message saying that they're closed due to bad weather (in Atlanta). How can you run an internet company like that and close your office due to bad weather? Surely they should have had a Plan B.

Very surprising. Any outfit offering that kind of service should have at least one backup site that can take over in an hour or two. Bigger ones should be continuously mirrored. What if they were providing the service for an online retailer?

Perhaps I'm being unfair. The design point for their service is marketing mailshots, not real time transaction handling.

If they are based in Atlanta then they have just had the worst winter storm they've had for 25 years or more, loads of snow and horrible driving. As they are not prepared for winter in Atlanta, no one has winter tires on, no snow ploughs, no gritters etc their transportation systems fell apart and no-one got to work.
On TV they were saying that there were numerous residents of the Atlanta area had never even seen snow before.
Ha! They should come to Canada!
