Paraguay, named after the river that flows centrally through it, is one of just two landlocked countries in the Americas. What else do you know about it?

Internet phone call app competition is ramping up

Postby ruggie » Fri 11 Feb 2011 08:34 GMT

After I got myself a decent desk mike, I went back to looking at ways to cut my phone bill - particularly when calling mobiles in a different country.

Skype Out seems to be working more reliably, and Google has really made a bold attack on the whole telephone system, particularly the mobile phones.

There could be some interesting battles in the next few years. Meanwhile, I reckon I am about to cut my phone bill in half as well as getting better quality speech whne talking to a mobile in the UK - at the cost of my sitting at a computer wearing headphones.

I've been using voice over IP for several years now. Costs 10 Euro to use the system for 90 days, most landline calls are free, calls to mobiles usually quite cheap.

Vania calls all her friends around the world for free, which certainly helps the budget and makes me very happy. :D

Last time I tried one of the 3rd party VoIP suppliers, I couldn't make it work - but that was about 3 years ago. Local Telco (now run by Orange) has free in-country system, but no decent tariffs for calls overseas, particularly to mobiles.
