Photographers and Artists

I guess it's a compliment

Looks like we have a few photographers and artists in our midst so here's a place to talk about all photography, art, and related subjects.

I guess it's a compliment

Postby Savannah_Alan » Sun 10 Dec 2006 23:38 GMT

I suppose it is a compliment, but I really shouldn't be paying for the bandwidth for him to steal my photograph .

Just going through my web server logs, I came across repeated links to one of my photographs. This person is using it as the backdrop to his "MySpace" page. Not only is he using the photo without my permission, but rather than saving it and uploading it himself, he's just "hotlinked" to the version on my server!

(I've added a "personal" copyright notice to it now, so I guess it will be gone soon).

Very naughty - and not the first time it's happened, of course...

Kay and I have blocked hotlinking on images hosted on britishexpat.com - which is a slight nuisance at times, but probably saves us a lot of hassle chasing people like Kevin.

Now on the rare occasions that we want to hotlink to our own images on other people's sites, we put them on another website (where they don't actually appear on any web page) and link to there instead.

I think sometimes people do this out of ignorance rather than any deliberate intention to steal. Remember the guy who used the daft photo of me as his avatar on another forum? I posted there and told him he was welcome to the photo but not the bandwidth.

Luckily the place was populated by a nice bunch of youngsters. The guy apologised and the others joined in by explaining to him why he shouldn't've done it. It was all resolved amicably. Still, you never know how some people are going to react and whether they might become abusive.

I think Kevin will be in for a bit of a shock when he sees your message. He'll probably think you've hacked his site rather than just altered your photo.

Yes, I suppose I need to clean up my act some and get rid of access to all of my photos that don't have a watermark on them.

With this guy, I'm having a hard time resisting the urge to replace the image with something like gay porn (no, I don't have any, but this is the Internet and I'm sure it won't take long to find some). I'd love to see the reaction from his friends .

Brilliant idea! He definitely seems a very macho kind of guy. How about replacing it with something girly - an advert for leg waxing or even tampons?

Yes, I suppose that's a little kinder. I've got to dash out now and deliver my car for a nice $1,000 repair of the waterpump .
If you've got anything appropriate, I'll replace it on my return. Bear in mind though, that a lot of the picture is obscured because of the other stuff on his page.

Can't be bothered scouring the web for one - especially as he's going to remove it as soon as he finds it. What about something from Trashed House? The lovely water feature, for example?

Slightly off-topic, I know, but...

Ouch! Makes me hearken after my old Maxi - £55 for the pump, about another tenner for the new hoses and jubilee clips (instead of the old clips that looked as if they'd been made out of coat hangers), and a fiver for the anti-freeze. Hell of a wrestle, though, and a nasty filthy job.

Still showing the old "Naughty" image here, Alan - look forward to seeing the refreshed version when it comes through. :compucoffee:

mmm, you shouldn't still be seeing the old picture (I'm sure you've done Ctrl-F5 already). You aren't going through a caching proxy server are you? That's the only way I can think that you could still be getting the old picture.

<OffTopic>
Oh yes, the good old Maxi :D. You'd think the water pump would be just hanging off the engine block driven by the crankshaft/fan belt wouldn't you? Not on an Audi. It's behind all that, inside the engine driven by the camshaft belt! It's silly to have them just do the water pump while they're in there, so I'll have the timing belt etc.. replaced as well. I'm expecting the bill to be around $1,000 (It's $652 just to replace the water pump).

People can be so cruel. His mates are gonna love it!

I still reckon that he'll think the site's been hacked and won't figure out that it's just you changing what he stole from you.

Yes, very likely. I've just gone and made the text look more precise so as not to give it away that it's part of the image.

His account says he's logged in today, so you could be right. He may be frantically trying to edit his MySpace as we speak .

Just had a look and it seems like he doesn't want to steal your photo any more, Alan. Can't think why.

No, can't think why . The last incarnation was this.
(I made it a little more personal to his girlfriend.)

He's now stealing someone else's photo and hotlinking to it  .
