Yes, persistence and complementary colours. Until it happens, you can't guess what's coming - and until you move your eyes, you don't realise you're looking at a B&W picture.

I've never seen such subtle use of complementary colours before. Usually, it's just saturated green blobs replacing red and vice versa.
