Using owls as a deterrent

Postby Kay » Thu 23 Oct 2014 08:33

Here's an interesting story about an owl who's gone missing.

The plastic owl on top of the chip shop gave me an idea. I'm constantly being annoyed by pigeons on the roof by my 'office'. I wonder if putting a plastic owl up there would deter them.

It doesn't sound as if it did much good in deterring seagulls. :(

There again, this might be a very good illustration of how necessary it is to match the deterrent to the threat. We heard plenty from governments during the Cold War about the importance of maintaining the nuclear deterrent, but I don't think a Trident missile would do much to keep the pigeons off our roof. Likewise, I don't think a plastic owl would have kept the Warsaw Pact tanks from pouring across the Iron Curtain.
