What is it really like?

Hi, I am considering retiring in Panama from the UK with the hope of enjoying a more pleasant climate. But I do have some very big worries. I noticed that all the properties have bars on the widows and doors. Is this due to violent crime? How safe are UK expats in Panama?I like to have a quiet life and like scenic beauty. Been able to walk my dogs safely is very important to me.

Could I ask for peoples opinions please?

I'm not in Panama but here in Canada we do get a lot of people who visit there and some who live there for retirement. Like any third world country the 'have nots' outnumber the 'haves' by a great number and there are many of them willing to help themselves to what you have. Living in compounds is helpful, making sure of the area you live in is a good one, avoiding the less reputable areas of the town/country especially at night are always recommended. I wouldn't walk the dogs at night unless it was in a well lit area, even then I might be extra cautious. If you haven't already visited I'd strongly suggest a recce be made and listen carefully to any real estate agent you talk to, they can give you loads of local advice. As with any move of this magnitude there are risks but if you check things out carefully first you should be okay.
