how to move to Malta/Gozo?

Hi everyone, could do with some help/info please? I went to Malta & Gozo many many years ago when I was young free and single, and fell in love with the place and it`s people, and now all these years later my husband and kids also love it too, and although we did originally think of moving much further away we have now decided that we would all very much love to live there so here comes all my questions. Firstly how do we go about getting permanent residency/appropriate papers to live there?, how do we find schools(kids are 13,12 and 9)? and how do we find out about work? Sorry for all the questions but have decided this really is where we want to go so need to know as much info as anyone can help with please? My husband is disabled and 62,a butcher, I am 44 and we need to continue working. I am a beauty therapist but would be willing to do anything, or find a small business? I do have experience of running my own catering business and I have also got a lot of receptionist experience.We would prefer to live in Gozo if possible but would obviously move to wherever we can find work or business. Hi Ros,

You don't need any special papers, residency permits etc to move to Malta as long as you are a European. If you want to get a local ID card, you can organise it any time after you arrive.
If you are going to buy a place, it has to be above a certain value (I think it is still LM30,000 for a flat and LM 50,000 for a house - but you won't find anything cheaper than that anyway except stuff that needs a lot of work).

As for making a living, it's a different matter. There are butchers all over the place and lots of beauy parlours too. You could maybe try some kind of niche thing - like making British style sausages and French style pate - I'd be your best customer!!

Tim hi and many thanks for the reply and info.
Glad to know we wouldn`t need permits or anything,just ID Cards but could you tell us how much approx.50,00 LM in GBP is please? Sorry to be a nuisance but couldn`t remember and need to work out currency so can start looking for houses/business etc.
My husband is very good at making pates and sausages so if we do get there and start up a butcher`s well let you know, and you can be the first to try our homemade bangers!!!

Rich calculated it right! But I might have been misleading you on the issue - I think things have changed a lot since Malta joined the EC and the minimum prices I mentioned might no longer apply. All the same, unless you are interested in doing a lot of renovation work or completing 'shell' buildings, you won't find much for less!

I've been thinking about the sausages / pate idea - I reckon it would work, you just can't buy decent ones here. What about steak and kidney pies etc? You could supply a few places and also sell hot off a van...

Thanks for the replies guys! We`ll probably rent first so we can have a good look around,just trying to sell our place here first although market seems very very slow at the present time!
Steak pies sounds like another good idea Tim,maybe we could look for some small premises that would suit and then make variety of pies, bangers and pates and sell them possibly at the market, will have to think further on ideas!? regards to all Ros

Just looking through the site and came accross your mail to Tim.

Pauline (my wife) and I (Bill) have just relocated full time to Gozo, Xaghra to be precise, we have been here 6 weeks and it's paradise. 21 October and the weather is still up in the 80's. I recon what Tim suggested about the food was a great idea, can't get steak & K pies for love or money. If you were looking for somewhere to stay whilst looking around we have bought a farmhouse here in Xaghra and have spare rooms which we are thinking or renting,(no pool unfortunately but only 6 mins away from Ramla Bay) the house is divided by a comman court yard
it's 2 houses split and so there is privacy on the other side.

We have 3 spare rooms 1 en suit 1 where the bathroom is just "outside" and the other, a small walk down the steps. If you are interested at any time email me via this site.
