Newsletter

Why not subscribe to the British Expat email newsletter?

It’s free! Each month we send out a digest of what’s new on BE, give you the heads up on anything we think may be of interest to you, and include an editorial piece about anything and everything under the sun. Our editorials have covered a wide range of topics including the history of salt, the prevalence of old naval slang in the English language, team dynamics, and more. It’s something completely different every month. You’re welcome to give feedback and to suggest new topics for us to cover. We also usually have a little something in the newsletter to amuse you.

All you need to do to receive it is to fill in your name and email address in the simple form below. As always, we promise never to sell or give away your email address to anyone else. We hate spam as much as everyone else (probably more!) and we don’t do it. And if you decide the newsletter’s not for you, you can unsubscribe at any time and be removed from the list immediately.

So join up and try it!

Please note:

Why is our newsletter “opt-in”?

We have always used an opt-in system, ie one in which the recipient has actively requested to receive it, as we believe this follows best practice. However, it is also a legal requirement for all sites in the EU. Article 13 of EU Directive 2002/58/EC [PDF file: 162KB] makes it quite clear that unsolicited direct marketing emails are illegal, and that electronic contact details may only be used for self-promotion activities where the address holder is given the opportunity to object, “free of charge and in an easy manner”, at the time the details are collected.

Opt-out lists are breaking the law! Opt-out is where the list owner has gathered your email address by some means – perhaps you have contacted them about some other matter – and then added you to their list on the basis that you can unsubscribe if that’s what you want to do. Not only are opt-out lists illegal, they are also misleading – particularly for advertisers. It’s all very well making claims such as “Our newsletter is received by over 20,000 members every month”, but just how many of them are actually read, or how many go straight in the trash because the recipient can’t be bothered to unsubscribe?

Attachments

You have the choice of signing up for our newsletter in plain text or HTML format. The HTML format email may show up in your email client as containing various styling images for the email host; they’re perfectly harmless, so please don’t worry about them.

Spam filters

Please don’t forget that if you have a spam filter operating, you’ll need to add nobody(at)britishexpat.com to your list of approved addresses (“whitelist”).

Thanks!
