Five questions about Poland – Quick Quiz

Once a substantial kingdom covering large parts of central and eastern Europe, Poland was carved up between its larger neighbours in the late 18th century and didn’t return as an independent state until 1918. It’s now the European Union’s sixth-largest country by population (and will become the fifth-largest after the UK leaves). But what else do you know about it?

  1. Poland is bordered by seven other countries. Can you name them?
  2. Who or what is a wisent?
  3. In what year did the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth adopt Europe’s first written constitution?
  4. Which famous pianist and composer became the new Republic of Poland’s second Prime Minister for 10 months in 1919?
  5. Before becoming Pope, what was the name of John Paul II? (Hint for Father Ted fans: the answer isn’t “Jim”.)
