Canada’s Citizenship Award 2010: Open for nominations

[News release from: Citizenship and Immigration Canada]

Ottawa, 10 June 2010 — Jason Kenney, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, today called on Canadians to nominate candidates for Canada’s Citizenship Award.

This prestigious award pays tribute to Canadians who have made an important contribution in promoting the rights and responsibilities of Canadian citizenship. It also honours Canadians who have made outstanding contributions to assisting newcomers in integrating into Canadian society.

“Canadian citizenship isn’t just a legal status that gives us a passport or a right to vote,” said Minister Kenney. “Citizenship is a quality that can be measured by the contribution that each of us makes to ensure Canada continues to be a free and prosperous country. Canada’s Citizenship Award honours Canadians who dedicate themselves tirelessly to making citizenship active in communities through helping newcomers find their way in a new land or encouraging young people to experience Canadian history and dream to be our next Canadian hero. This award recognizes their invaluable contributions to Canada.”

Canada’s Citizenship Award is presented to as many as 20 living Canadians for work done on a voluntary basis. The winners are selected by a panel that includes citizenship judges from across Canada and will be announced during Canada’s Citizenship Week, 18–24 October 2010. Each person honoured will receive a gold maple leaf pin and a certificate signed by the Minister.
