This month
It’s been a while since our last newsletter. (Sorry about that.) You might be forgiven for thinking that we’d flown south for the winter. Except it wasn’t the winter. Not in the Northern Hemisphere, anyway.
So where have we been? Well, part of the time we spent arranging for some of our stuff to be repatriated to the UK. You may remember that about two years ago we posted several articles about the challenges involved in moving back “home”. At that point in time, shipping was one issue which simply didn’t arise – not least because we didn’t have a place in the UK which we could call our own. But our situation’s changed since then, and now we’ve got several cubic metres of possessions making their way across the high seas. We’ll report back on that process once we’ve come through it.
Meanwhile, there’s been movement of sorts on the Brexit process. At least we now know that Theresa May intends to start the Article 50 process by 31 March. (As Private Eye editor Ian Hislop pointed out on Have I Got News For You, we now face the prospect of the UK resuming its independent existence on April Fool’s Day 2019.)
On the other hand, it’s no clearer now what Brexit will look like – in particular whether it’ll be a “soft” exit allowing the UK to remain within the EU single market, or a “hard” exit where the UK goes it alone. The latest talk has been of a “smooth” exit, but without any kind of definition of what the terms of that exit will be.
Debate about Brexit and its effects continues on the BE Forum, especially among our Malta members. You can join in that discussion here.
Meanwhile, of course, the Forum continues to provide information on a wide range of expat issues, as well as the opportunity to socialise with like-minded people all around the world. You can see the full range of discussion boards here.
While we’ve been busy with other things, we’ve still had time to add a couple of Quick Quizzes. Our first, prompted by the mad dash of British Citizens to hang on to EU citizenship via second passports, was our take on what an Irish citizenship test might look like, if there were such a thing. And the second, prompted by our own migration and the change of the seasons, is about bird migrations.
And our latest Pic of the Week takes its cue from the latest Quick Quiz – some swans on the Minnewater in Bruges. (Any ideas what the collective noun for swans is? If you know, we’d love to hear it.)
