Five pub quiz questions – Quick Quiz answers

We asked you five “pub quiz” type questions. Here come the answers!

1. The “Wiki” in Wikipedia was originally inspired by the Wiki Wiki Shuttle bus at Honolulu International Airport. What does wiki-wiki mean?
   “Very quick”. The inventor of the first ever wiki site, Ward Cunningham, was hunting around for some better name than “quick-web” and remembered having been told to take the Wiki Wiki Shuttle when passing through the airport. He liked the alliteration and called his site “WikiWikiWeb”. It’s still around, although it hasn’t been edited since 2014.
2. Dickin Medals are awarded in recognition of what?
   Animals’ conspicuous gallantry or devotion to duty while serving or associated with any branch of the Armed Forces or Civil Defence Units. Introduced by the People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals in 1943, the Medal was awarded to 54 animals between then and 1949. Since its revival in 2000 it’s been awarded a further 17 times (as of June 2019), including an honorary award in 2014 for Warrior, a warhorse who served throughout the First World War, to commemorate the contribution of all animals during that conflict.
3. The original version of the ring-pull tab on drinks cans often caused injuries, particularly to children who ingested the detachable tab after dropping it into the can of drink. The retained ring-pull, trademarked as the “Sta-Tab”, replaced it. In what year was the “Sta-Tab” patented?
   1975, though it didn’t make it onto UK drinks cans until 1989. The ring-pull itself was patented in 1963 and appeared on the first drinks cans almost immediately. Before then, tins for drinks had had to have their lids pierced with a tin or bottle opener with a sharp point. Older readers may remember the big seven-pint tins – notoriously Watney’s Party Seven, containing its pasteurised and filtered Red Barrel bitter.



4. What is the main ingredient in the original British version of mock turtle soup?
   Calf’s head, including the brain. A recipe published by Jane Austen’s friend Martha Lloyd called for the head to be boiled until the horn was tender, then cut into slices the size of a finger, with as little lean meat as possible; for the brain to be chopped and to be mixed with chopped oysters and their liquor, three pints of mutton or veal broth, and half a pint of madeira, along with sweet herbs, lemon peel and the juice of two onions. Yum.
   (As you can see, when Sir John Tenniel drew the Mock Turtle for Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, he gave the Mock Turtle the body of a turtle but the head, rear legs and tail of a calf.)
5. In 1990, future President Donald Trump won the Golden Raspberry award for Worst Supporting Actor. Can you name the film?

Ghosts Can’t Do It, a film written and directed by John Derek and starring his wife Bo (Katie) and Anthony Quinn (the 30 years older Scott). After Scott suffers a heart attack which leaves him unable to have sex, he kills himself but returns as a ghost. He and Katie concoct a scheme to have a young man drown so that Scott can take over his body. The Dereks both won Razzies for their parts in the film’s production (Worst Actress, Worst Director) and the film itself tied for the Worst Picture award.
